Join us for the opening reception of Laurie M. Landry’s month long exhibition: "Deafies," a play on 'selfies,' which uses painted portraits to raise awareness of what its like to be a deaf person. An artist talk will take place in the IMA Gallery at 7pm.
About the artist
"I have been profoundly deaf since birth. In order to understand what is being said, I read lips, and I often miss important details, despite the fact that I wear a hearing aid. I compensate this by looking for visual clues such as body language, facial expressions and context.
I have incorporated my experience of deafness into my works by exploring my fascination with words by studying body language, facial expressions, sound waves, spectrograms and using them as a visual imprint in my paintings."
