Exhibition Announcement & Artist Talk “The Barn Project” by Kristin Krimmel

Island Mountain Arts (located at 2323 Pooley St, Wells, BC) is excited to announce an exhibition launch on Friday March 15th, 2019 at 7 pm featuring the work of Kristin Krimmel, titled “The Barn Project.”

Kristin is an intuitive artist, experimenting with materials and forms. Her most recent work is an ode to the disappearing beauty of these structures near her home in the Lower Mainland. “Twelve years ago, when I moved to Maple Ridge, I immediately felt soothed by the landscape of rolling farmlands nestled up against the dikes of the Alouette River,” Kristin says. “I was especially attracted to the barns along Old Dewdney Trunk Road and eventually took every opportunity to photograph them, going into the side roads, not knowing what I would find and not having the slightest idea what I would do with these images I collected.”

These photographs became resource material for “The Barn Project”. Kristin drew inspiration from the way light played on the barns she photographed in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows area, morning, noon and night, changing the geometric architecture, emblazoning the surface and deepening the shadows. “I am only part way on this journey. The paintings and graphite drawings are only the first outpourings of my ideas on the beauty of this area in which I live,” she says.

Kristin was born in Vancouver and trained at UBC as a specialist in the teaching of fine arts. Later she received a Diploma Regional in Painting from the Ecole Regionale des Beaux Arts de Reims, France. After seven years in France, she returned to B.C. to become an instructor with Emily Carr College of Art and Design, teaching drawing, colour and design. In 1987 Kristin was artist-in-residence for the E.C.C.A.D. Outreach Program at Vernon, B.C. and was also Jurist for PACIFETE, the Francophone Festival of the Arts sponsored by the Canada Council. She was a member of the Maple Ridge Public Art Committee from 2009-2014.

Her work has twice been selected for the Joan Miro Foundation's International Drawing Competition and was included in their touring exhibition in Spain, Romania, Poland and Bulgaria. She has received an honorary medal from the City of Vichy, France for work exhibited in the U.F.A.C.S.I. XII International Salon. Kristin's work has been seen in numerous international exhibitions in Holland, France, Canada and the United States, and in several Stephen Cannell television productions. Her work is held in the Burnaby, Penticton and Vernon Art Galleries in British Columbia; in corporate collections including B.C. Hydro, Vancouver General Hospital, Lions Gate Hospital, Saint Paul's Hospital and the Tapestry Foundation. Her work is held in private collections in Canada, Ireland, Scotland, Germany and France. She was an Artist in Residence at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy; the International Atelier de Seguret in France; in Vernon, B.C; and in 2018 completed a four week privately commissioned residency in Flintbek, Germany.

Kristin is a member of the Fort Gallery Artists Collective and lives and works in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada.
