We sing in the car, in the shower, we hum doing our dishes, we sing with other people and for most, singing is something that can bring joy. This workshop will explore some singing techniques, some basic and useful vocal physiology and how to sing with ease and expand upon your skill base. We will also look at how, when we include the whole body in the process of singing, challenges around pitch, volume, breath and nervousness can greatly improve. We will be playing with different styles of singing with a lean toward gospel and soul.
Melisa Devost is a musician whose influences are as wide as the continents she’s traveled and toured across. In making Vancouver her home, she collaborated and played with some of the city’s finest, running the gamut from traditional gospel, roots country and blues, to indie rock and noise. Having a fascination with voice both as a vocalist and teacher, Melisa learns and writes music that challenges her, always chasing beautiful melodies and their counterparts.
Currently Melisa mostly performs playing acoustic and electric guitars solo or accompanied by two vocalists. She covers themes of loss and longing, fate and spirit, utilizing her soulful voice and solid guitar chops to draw influences from the past, such as traditional gospel, country blues and soul, into the present.
In addition to writing for herself, she is fast making a name for herself as a collaborater, recently contributing two tracks (one being the title track) to the Juno nominated record by David Gogo, "Come On Down".
Melisa has also contributed her versitile voice to a number of studio recordings, Ken Whiteley's "Gospel Music Makes Me Feel Alright," Kim Barlow's "Saplings," both Kent Mcalister's most recents, and Corbin Murdoch and The Nautical Miles' "Wartime Lovesong" to name a few.
