For over two decades, Polaris Prize longlisted Toronto's downtempo soul saviours electronic duo LAL, comprised of Rosina Kazi and Nicholas Murray, have built a catalogue of silvery, internationally-influenced electronica that insists that the dancefloor remain a place of resistance. In the process, they’ve become the backbone of Toronto’s sprawling DIY scene, nurturing and propping up a multi-generational group of artists.

Naomi Shore (BC)

Thursday, Oct 22nd, 7:00 PM

Naomi Shore has laid bare her rich heart with solo album “Piece by Piece”. She’s branching out, but leaning in, and the result is a ripe sound born of deeper self inquiry. It is refreshing, powerful, unapologetic, but funny in the way that very honest things should be.
With raw heart and sharp wit, she delivers performances that are at once contemplative and clever; vulnerable songwriting is buoyed by surging vocals as smooth and full as deep water. Folded into all this are flecks of desert country, blues and classical piano.
For this storyteller and love of sad songs, crafting music has become more than her trade. It is a way to process life, to send a searching had out though the mists of a melody and connect with the world.

HALF/ASIAN with Amy the CODA (BC)

Saturday, Oct 24th, 2:00 PM

Music for your ears can also be music for your eyes.

Inclusion and accessibility. Easy topics to talk about but not always easy to implement or embrace. Half/Asian + Amy the CODA invite their audience to reconsider what these two words truly look like in an active and internalized expression.

The electro-synth pop duo offers up lyrics that engage audiences with gentle, LoFi, 80’s synth- pop tracks. Half/Asian (Ian Griffiths) sings in English about the complexities of topics such as racism, internal-conflict, love and personal empowerment.

Amy the CODA (Amy Braun) is the also a lead singer in the duo, but you will never hear her voice. Amy the CODA sings in sing-language. Expressing the lyrics in her native-tongue, Amy is the Child of a Deaf Adult (CODA). Together, Amy the CODA and Half/Asian deconstruct the bridging experience that children of marginalized groups of people navigate. They recognize that they’re unique experiences as translators for their parents offer them insight into what it means to create inclusion.
