Workshop Description

This dynamic and inspiring workshop is an introduction to gouache, an opaque water-based paint, appreciated by artists for its lush colours, rapid drying and flowing coverage. Where watercolour relies on the white of the paper for light areas, gouache can be built up light over dark, as in oil or acrylic painting, resulting in a smooth, matte finish that is almost velvety in appearance. It’s compatible with other water-based media such as acrylic, watercolour, ink, and markers, as well as dry media like pastels and coloured pencil. In many ways, gouache embodies the finer qualities of watercolour, oils and acrylics while avoiding many of their limitations. We will explore the natural environment around Wells for our subjects. Participants will come away from this workshop with inspiration for creative projects at home.

Instructor Bio

Kate Scoones was born in Vancouver, BC and raised on the Southern Gulf Islands. She received a BFA (Honours in Painting) from the University of Victoria in 1985 before attending the Art Studio at the Banff Centre for the Arts for two years. She’s worked for the British Council in London, UK; the Banff Centre for the Arts; and the Burnaby Arts Centre (Jack Shadbolt Centre). Prior to her current role as guest faculty in Painting at the Vancouver Island School of Art, Kate was part of the administration delivering the school’s Certificate and Diploma programs. Kate is currently participating in the Turps Correspondence Course from London UK, with John Greenwood as her mentor. In 2017 and in 2018, Kate was part of the Toni Onley Artist Project, Island Mountain Arts, in Wells, BC. Kate’s work is in public and private collections. maintains a dedicated studio practice and participates in exhibitions.
