Workshop Description
This four-day printmaking course takes a beginner through basic mono-printing, lino and wood cut, dry-point and embossing processes. No previous experience in printmaking is required.
Schedule
Day 1: Thursday, July 19 , 9:00 to 12:00 and 1:30 to 3:30
9:00 Welcoming participants, exchange of names, experience and expectations of this workshop, Q & A.
9:30 Outline of program, techniques, material and equipment. Safety. Q&A
10:00 MONOPRINTING: set up, choice of materials, and different surfaces, including finding objects on site. Q&A
12:00 Lunch
1:30 LINO and/ or WOOD BLOCK PRINT: Discussion of image transfer, positive/ negative space theory, reduction process, black and white, colour printing, brayer and spoon or press printing method,
preparing paper for next day's printing. Q&A
3:30 official end of day's workshop,
Participants are encouraged to continue working on their plates in after hours.
Day 2: Friday, July 20, 9:00 to 12:00 and 1:30 to 3:30
9:00 Preparation of plates and paper or other material of choice for print.
Printing.
If using the press 5 copies per edition. Q&A
12:00 Lunch
1:30 DRY POINT: discussion of materials (aluminium, zinc, plexiglass, sintra) and technique of image making. Q&A
Preparation of paper for next day's printing. Q&A
Day 3: Saturday, July 21, 9:00 to 12:00 and 1:30 to 3:30
9:00 Since Dry Point Printing requires the use of the presses by everybody, lots should be drawn to establish the sequence. Q&A
Preparation of plates, paper and inks for printing.
Editions of 5 will be the limit. Q&A
12:00 Lunch
1:30 EMBOSSING : Emboss images are created by deforming damp paper over an uneven surfaces creating colourless, light and shadow images.
Ideal material for carving is highly pressure resistant Sintra. Demonstration.
Preparing the paper for Emboss Printing on the following day. Q&A
Day 4: Sunday, July 22, 9:00 to 12:00 and 1:30 to 3:30
9:00 Completing the EMBOSS PLATES. Running tests and final printing. Q&A
12:00 Lunch
1:30 Completing previous projects as desired or printing projects brought along.
3:00 Wrap up, Q&A, rating of workshop, fare well.
Materials and Equipment to bring if you have it:
Pencils HB, 2B; 1 Art Gum and 1 General’s kneaded rubber eraser (putty-like), OLFA knife, 50 cm (20inch)or 61cm (24inch) metal ruler, black India ink, 1 large and 1 small watercolour brushes (round), water colours, set of good quality carving tools (for lino, wood block and sintra), sponge, cotton rags, scissors, spoon, latex gloves, smock/ shirt, Scotch tape , 1" masking tape (green), small bottle of white wood/paper glue, 2", 4", 6" brayers., personal material for plates and blocks.
Instructor Bio:
HANS-CHRISTIAN BEHM was born and raised in Germany. In 1961 he immigrated to Canada and began studying Architectural Design at UBC, going on to work in that field for 45 years. Later in life Behm developed a keen interest in printmaking and began mentoring under Wayne Eastcott at Capilano University’s Art Institute. He lives and makes art on Bowen Island, BC where he helped to found the Bowen Island Art Council.
